Rumpi Mondé is an edgy short film that uses spellbinding imagery and music to narrate a story of a young man, new to a big city, confronted by flashbacks of his old traditions as he maneuvers through the night. Today the short film, Rumpi Mondé will be released at 20:30 BRT/ 7:30 EST. We got a moment to ask the film’s executive producer and musical director, Gabriel Marinho, a few questions:
Rumpi Mondé é um curta-metragem que usa a hipnotizante música e imagem para narrar a história de um homem jovem , novo para uma cidade grande, confrontado por flashbacks de suas antigas tradições como ele manobras durante a noite. Hoje, o curta-metragem , Rumpi Mondé será lançado às 20:30 BRT / 07:30 EST. Temos um momento para pedir o produtor executivo do filme e diretor musical , Gabriel Marinho, algumas perguntas :
What motivated you to make this film? O que o motivou a fazer este filme?
– The initial motivation for doing the movie was Mondé’s signature: OUR CULTURE. OUR SPACE. This concept is the backbone of our projects. It means something like: No matter where you are from, you gonna be yourself everywhere. It’s the message to the youth in Brazilian big cities, who are losing our cultural and original roots. In Brazil we have 3 main lineages, the Portuguese, African and Indigenous, the last two are being forgotten. We never agreed to this, and we tried to make a movie using that concept on our four fields of action: music, cinema, design, and photography.
– A motivação inicial para fazer o filme foi a assinatura do Mondé : nossa cultura. Nosso espaço. Este conceito é a espinha dorsal de nossos projetos. Significa algo como: Não importa de onde você é , você vai ser você mesmo em todos os lugares . É uma mensagem para os jovens nas grandes cidades brasileiras, que estão perdendo nossas raízes culturais e originais. No Brasil temos três raízes principais, a Portuguesa, Africana e Indígena, as duas últimas estão sendo esquecidas . Nós nunca concordamos com isso , e nós tentamos fazer um filme usando esse conceito em nossas quatro áreas de atuação : música, cinema , design e fotografia.
Tell us a crazy/interesting story about the making of this movie? Conte-nos uma história maluca/interesante sobre a produção deste filme?
– Well during the time of shooting, me and the crew used to work during the day. We worked many days like zombies without sleep. We really lived and shot between the real Brazilian streets, we saw alcohol, drugs and fear. I think the most interesting story is about one of the movie scenes where there are a lot of candles on the ground, -they have a spiritual message-this really makes my neck hair spit up. But only those who have that spiritual side alive within them is gonna feel and see what is written between the scene.
– Bem , durante o tempo de filmagem, eu e a todo da equipe costumavamos trabalhar durante o dia também. Trabalhamos muitos dias como zumbis sem dormir . Nós realmente vivemos e filmamos entre os reais ruas brasileiras , vimos álcool, drogas e medo . Eu acho que a história mais interessante é sobre uma das cenas do filme , onde há um monte de velas no chão , eles têm uma mensagem espiritual , isso realmente faz meu cabelo arrepiar . Mas só quem tem esse lado espiritual vivo vai sentir e ver o que está escrito além da cena.
Tell us about your use of music in the film. Conte-nos sobre o seu uso da música no filme.
– Well, the music in the movie is more than a background, we made a movie using a soundtrack, not a soundtrack for a movie. The music is the movement, and the heart beat is the first sound and movement that everybody has. The actor Gabriel Brands got it completely and he felt this, and made his character a great performance (with this concept).
The music began when I made the four songs. I used to be out at night and in the streets everyday and it reflected on the composition. But I used my original culture in it.
I was born in Salvador and lived on the country side of Bahia in my childhood. My blood comes from there and I have the afro drum in my blood, the Candomblé religion is so alive in my life. I mixed those roots with synthetizers of the urban background where we are.
I invited Wladimir Gasper (Pedro Bernardes) to play piano and synths on the first and the last track. He made an incredible solo on the last track. Alexandre Seabra played bass on two songs and composed one with me and my father, Tony Marinho. My father played a special candomble drum on the second theme. Ramiro Mart mixed with me and did the mastering.
– Bem, a música no filme é mais do que um fundo , fizemos um filme com uma trilha sonora , não uma trilha sonora para um filme. A música é o movimento , e as batidas do coração são o primeiro som e movimento que todo mundo tem . O ator Gabriel Brands entendeu completamente e ele sentiu isso, e fez o seu caráter uma grande performance ( com esse conceito ) .
A música começou quando eu fiz os quatro músicas . Eu costumava estar na noite e nas ruas todos os dias e isso refletiu na composição. Mas eu usei a minha cultura original nela.
Eu nasci em Salvador e vivi no interior da Bahia em minha infância. Meu sangue vem de lá e eu tenho o tambor no meu sangue , a religião Candomblé é muito viva na minha vida. Eu misturei essas raízes com sintetizadores do fundo urbano onde estamos.
Convidei Wladimir Gasper (Pedro Bernardes ) a tocar piano e sintetizadores na primeira e na última faixa. Ele fez um solo incrível na última faixa . Alexandre Seabra tocou baixo em duas canções e compôs uma comigo, e também convidei meu pai , Tony Marinho. Meu pai tocava um tambor de candomblé especial sobre o segundo tema . Ramiro Mart mixou comigo e fez a masterização do aúdio.
What is the message of the film? Qual é a mensagem deste filme?
– The message of that film is simple: Got to the streets. Move your body. Go find yourself. Be the street. Make the streets your property and common property. It’s your place too, take care. Well, the streets are the place where you must to look to your fears and prejudices and you must to learn how to live with it, you can’t deny it. I use to call streets a place of confrontation, with yourself and with each other.
– A mensagem do filme é simples : Vá para a rua. Mover-se. Encontrar-se . Seja nas ruas. Faz a rua que propriedade e uma propriedade comum . É seu lugar também, cuide. Bem , as ruas são o lugar onde você precisa encarar seus medos e preconceitos e você deve aprender a lidar com isso , você não pode negar. Eu costuma chamar as ruas de um lugar de confronto, com você mesmo e com o outro.
