And the winners are…Prêmio Noite -Rio de Janeiro – Night Awards 2013

Rio de Janeiro is known for it’s nightlife yet often behind the scenes players go unnoticed. Leo Feijó, is changing that by giving props were props are due with the Prêmio Noite awards. Feijó, himself an entrepreneur in the nightlife arena, initiated the Prêmio Noite awards a year ago. In total, twenty-three award recipients were narrowed down this year from 425, first by online voting from the public then by a panel of peer judges. See the 2013 photos below!

Activists take a stand against oil drilling in the Artic//Ativistas tomar uma posição contra a exploração de petróleo no Ártico

Brazilian environmentalist, Ana Paula Maciel, is one of 30 activists that were jailed after a protest at a Russian offshore oil rig in the Arctic two months ago.   The activists have been named the ‘Artic 30’.  A self-proclaimed nature lover and Greenpeace ship crewmember was recently relased following the granting of bail by St Petersburg’s  Primorsky court following the payment of 2 million ruble ($60,750) bail.

Ambientalista brasileiro , Ana Paula Maciel , é um dos 30 ativistas que foram presos depois de um protesto em uma plataforma de petróleo offshore da Rússia no Ártico há dois meses. Os ativistas foram nomeados o ” Artic 30 ‘ . Um amante da natureza auto-proclamado e Greenpeace navio tripulante foi recentemente relased após a concessão da fiança pelo tribunal Primorsky de São Petersburgo após o pagamento de 2 milhões de rublos ( $ 60,750 ) fiança.

There was an international call for their release by well known figures including British Prime Minister David Cameron as well as stars such as Madonna and Paul McCartney.  The 30 were originally charged with piracy, but Russian authorities dropped those charges and replaced them with hooliganism, which carries a lesser prison sentence. Everyone is not in support of the cause of the Artic 30.

“Are they doing something noble? Yes, they are. Did they act rightly when they climbed the platform? No, it was not right,” said Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, in televised comments at a meeting with writers. “Some climbed onto the platform, while others attacked our coastguards, practically storming them with their boats,” Putin said.

Os 30 foram originalmente acusado de pirataria , mas as autoridades russas caiu essas acusações e substituiu-os com o vandalismo , o que acarreta uma pena de prisão menor . “

Todo mundo não é em apoio à causa dos 30 Artic.

“Eles estão fazendo algo nobre? Sim, eles são. Será que eles agir corretamente quando eles subiram a plataforma? Não, não era certo “, disse Vladimir Putin, Presidente da Rússia, em comentários televisionados em uma reunião com os escritores. “Alguns subiu na plataforma, enquanto outros atacaram nossos guarda costeira, praticamente atacando-os com os seus barcos”, disse Putin.

As of now only, Tasmanian Colin Russell remains as the final Greenpeace Artic 30 campaigner to remain in St Petersburg detention.

November 20th is Dia da Consciência Negra, or Black Awareness Day. It’s a public holiday in several states including São Paulo, but the entire month of November usually sees many cultural activities, discussions and events to commemorate black resistance and talk about current issues important to the black Brazilian community. This date marks the death of Zumbi dos Palmares, a hero of resistance and the last surviving leader of the settlements founded by runaway slaves (quilombos).

The song “Alienação,” or Alienation, by Ilê Aiyê caught my attention, and works well to commemorate this holiday.
