1. Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, Maranhão State
The Brazilian Sahara? Not quite. Located on the outskirts of the Amazon basin, the Lençóis Maranhenses National park looks like a desert but isn’t. This majestic land of rippling dunes situated just east of Baía de São Joséo decadently spreads like a creamy gelato or silky sheets of sand (Lençóis actually means bedsheets) across an area the size of Rhode Island. During the rainy season the land collects rain water in the valleys between the dunes creating spectacular natural pools of fresh water and a visual masterpiece.
2. Roraima, Mount Roraima on the border of Brazil, Venezuela and Guyana
Mount Roraima is one of the oldest natural formations on the planet tracing back over two billion years. So old that it is central to the mythology of the indigenous people of the area-the Pemon and Kapon. They tell parables of the plateau being the former stump of a grand tree that once held all the fruits and tuberous vegetables in the world and about the pterodactyls that once lived on the plateau. Today the area remains the least populated state of Brazil with fewer than 500 000 inhabitants and was featured in a modern story on the big screen- the animated movie ‘Up.’
3. Chapada Diamantina, Bahia
Dubbed the Lost World, Chapada Diamantina is like a Disney World of everything nature has to offer in one mammoth park. it is a surreal mix of countless underground rivers, dozens of glorious waterfalls, mountains, plateaus, savannah, rainforest, high peaks, caves, pools and a giant natural water slide you have to see to believe.
4. Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina
Situated between two of the largest cities in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo is Parque Nacional da Serra da Bocaina, an especially unique and rich strip of the proteced Atlantic oceanic forest. This UNESCO World Heritage site is a lush and intricate 104 thousand hectares of rare and nearly extinct species of fauna and flora, wildlife and diverse landscapes. Not to be missed is the Gold Trail (Trilha do Ouro), which offers hikers a 3 day exploration of the historic path that links the park to São José do Barreiro Parati- just mindful of the jaguars, capuchin monkeys, sloths, marmosets, hawks, and eagles that may cross your path.
5. Mamiraua Reserve, near Tefé
The Mamirauá Reserve along the Rio Solimões is the largest flooded forest ecosystem in Brazil and one of the most unique places to view the wildlife of the Amazon. Just a 90-minute boatride from Tefé, Mamirauá is one of the best places to see the Amazon in all it’s splendor- overflowing with pink dolphins, sloths, rare scarlet-faced uakari monkey, macaws and toucans. In the rainy season (January–April) the area becomes a várzea ( flooded forest) the water rises to the trees and local tourguides lead vistors around the area by canoe. During the dry season, the rest of the year, the water subsides and vistors hike on foot. A true exhibit of sustainable development, the local community directly maintains and benefits from the fiscalization, maintence and research of the reserve.

Abaporu by Tarsila do Amaral
The painting is a riff of Abaporu, of one of the most famous paintings by renowned Brazilian painter Tarsila do Amaral as a birthday gift to her husband Oswald de Andrade. An Abaporu, is a word from the Brazilian Tupi-Guaraní Indians that describes a man who eats people.
A pintura é um remake do Abaporu, de uma das mais famosas pinturas do renomado pintora brasileira Tarsila do Amaral, um presente de aniversário para o marido Oswald de Andrade. Um Abaporu, é uma palavra dos índios brasileiros tupi-guarani, que descreve um homem que come gente.
Jefferson’s art teacher asked him to paint a painting for a special guest speaker, Diva Pavesi, who promotes Brazilian culture in France. Since the class had studied the Abaporu by Tarsila do Amaral and by Romero Britto, his teacher suggested he paint his own take. He did such a great job, Diva Pavesi decided to include Jefferson’s Abaporu in an exhibit at The Louvre.
Professor de arte de Jefferson pediu-lhe para pintar um quadro por um orador convidado especial, Diva Pavesi, que promove a cultura brasileira na França. Mais cedo, a classe estudou o Abaporu de Tarsila do Amaral e por Romero Britto, então seu professor sugeriu que ele pintar sua própria visão. Ele fez um ótimo trabalho, Diva Pavesi decidiu incluir Abaporu de Jefferson em uma exposição no Louvre.

“I want to see the painting there. Guess what Paris is all lit up,” says Jefferson, who has only been as far as Cunha (to 231 km from Sao Paulo). “It’s unlike France, it only has land.”

Erica Ferrari created the piece above after a residency in Utica,NY. Erica described her experience there as living between ” between ghosts and dreams – dreams of hundreds of immigrants who settled here during the past decades to today, seeking refuge and prosperity, and the ghosts of time of great economic growth and vitality.” The piece is a panel of 2.25 m high by 1.55 m wide, made with wood and formica.

Anaísa Franco created the work above entitled Expanded Eye. Anaísa states,Anaisa Franco criou o trabalho acima intitulado Eye expandido. Anaisa diz:”the aim of the work is to expand the vision of human beings, inviting them to be observed with their own eyes through a large transparent interface that multiplies the points of view of the viewer. The sculpture seeks to look inside in a magical context, in which perception combines with self-reflection and observation.”

Vania Mignone’s paintings often invoke a feeling of introspection. It could possibly be due to Vania’s artistic proces of focusing solely on and being consumed by the act of painting itself. As she writes, her works are as much about the process of painting itself as they are about the expression of ideas: “What interests me is PAINTING […] I like it when the unique qualities of painting reveal themselves: the layers of superimposed paint, dripping paint, the weight of the artist’s hand.”

Accomplished artist Marina Abramovic created the print above after studying shamanism in Brazil. According to Vanity Fair, Marina said the following about her experience while in Brazil: “I like to be exposed to life.” At one of the Brazilian sites where she stayed, the shaman believed that people create a kind of current of energy. “You close your eyes,” Marina explained, “and you become a receiver and sender of energy at the same time.” The print, Marina said, reflects her in that state.

On Mandela’s second trip to Brazil, he was quoted saying he “was almost suffocated by so much love.” The nobel prize-winning leader is well known for his personal story of fighting against apartheid in South Africa (including being jailed) to his leadership as an activist against racism, for his work with HIV/AIDS, as the former President of South Africa, and for spreading his meassages of peace, equality and love throughout the world. Murals and painting of Mandela are emblazoned on Brazilian builings and there are even streets named after him. Though Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela died today, Brazil’s love for Mandela, like that of the and the entire world’s will ensure he lives on.
